just a quick note to ask you to pass our thanks on to Jerry the Rigger. Following his amusing-but-serious seminar we have instituted a formal twice daily rigging check. Not as often as he’d like, but a lot more than we’ve ever done previously, and with a great deal more care.
This afternoon a gimlet-eyed crew member spotted that the split pin holding the clevis pin at the lower end of the forestay, although present & correct and properly splayed, was actually well on the way to wearing through (it was new with the rig 12 months ago). We changed it at sea (heart in mouth), and once extracted were able to see that it clearly would have failed at sometime in the future with probably catastrophic results. There is no way that we would have spotted this pre-Jerry. So a big thanks to him, please!!
